Default Dotable VPS information thread

Status - 16th Aug, 2006 - Ordered. Dispatch to colo ASAP.

DotVPS1 is a 2U Dual Core Dual Opteron 270 (4x2.0ghz), 8GB ECC RAM, 4x250GB SATA2 drives with hardware RAID+1 and 2x550w hot swap redundant PSU (power supply units).

DotVPS1 is housed in the Dotable cabinet in our 2nd colo space - Carrier Center LA.

Server function - Windows/Linux VPS accounts.

DotVPS1 is the first Dotable server that will offer VPS accounts. These are VPS accounts in the true sense of the word too. Clients can choose their own OS, their own control panel, or no control panel. These servers allow for Dotable clients to build their own small dedicated servers, with their own OS, CP and dedicated resources like RAM, disk space and data transfer.

An announcement will be made in the main Annoucement forum, when this new product is ready to roll.

Yes, Cpanel Linux VPS accounts will be available on this server. The number of slots is limited of course. We'll do our best to keep hardware up with demand, but there may be times when there are no more VPS slots available until new servers are racked.

I've been looking for a decent VPS system for sometime, I do find that the ones on the market right now are very strangly priced. A decent VPS with 256mb RAM seems to cost well over $40 if you want even a semi decentish VPS, look forward to seeing your VPS solutions hopefully priced sensibly and not like the products on the market right now.

Our VPS plans certianly won't be priced around the $40/mth target. They'll be priced in the $125.00+ catagory, as we need to keep as few VPS accounts per server, yet also the server needs to be a viable proposition for us too. Each VPS we create will have its own OS, own control panels, or no control panel etc. It's as much a dedicated server as you can get.

For the smaller price point, that's still in the reseller section of the market. Our pricing is gradual from Multiple domain >> Reseller >> VPS >> Dedicateds. You can't have VPS pricing down in the Reseller area, if you want to build a long term sustainable hosting model, and keep your servers as lightly populated and as fast as possible.

I think its true to say that those VPS accounts around that price band are nothing of the sort and there are many accounts on the servers of this kind.... in other words its just like some other reseller hosting they cram as many VPS accounts onto the server as poss knowing that most of the people arent likely to use their allocated bandwidth/space etc.

Will the server be relatively using more resources if you have different OS on the same physical server? such as Windows and CentOS together ...

is VPs world able to clearly define CPU usages yet? or it is still shared

CPU usage can be pegged (and will be if 1 VPS uses up a large amount of cpu for an extended interval) but as far as cpu limits are concerned for VPS, ours will have no set limit, they will be able to use a fair share. With 2 x Dual Core Opterons in these servers, that's a lot of cpu shared between a few VPS servers.

How much more resources Windows uses than linux is really irrelevant, the host servers will host the number of VPS's that fit into each server, these will not be oversold at all with regards memory or disk allocation.

You will be getting a very nice VPS service on these machines
