Just a heads up that Jupiter server will be relocated to another cabinet in the 530W datacenter as part of our colocation consolidation and improvement of services.
This move will take place on the Thursday 17th, 10.00am PDT, 2008. Live countdown until migration commences. The server will be powered down, removed from the cabinet, added to the new Dotable cabinet and powered back up. For those clients with custom nameservers, this will mean new IPs for your nameservers. There's no way around this unfortunately, and we will email you with your new nameserver IPs as the server is moved to the new Dotable cabinet. You will then need to change your nameserver IPs at your domain register for your main WHM domain. Shortly after that, your domains will then resolve from the new location. Downtime will be minimal but there will be some downtime. This cannot be avoided. For those clients that do not use custom nameservers, you don't need to do anything, as we will update the server's default nameserver IPs. For those of you that use 3rd party DNS services, you will need to update the A records accordingly with your newly assigned IP addresses. If you can, you would be advised to lower your TTL (Time To Live) times on your dns zones, as low as possible, as soon as you are able, in preparation for an IP address change next week. If you have any questions about the server move, post them below or drop a ticket into the Dotable helpdesk. ![]() |

I presume a full backup (on another server) will be made before a technician starts running around with the server?
O/T: Talking about backups, what happened to the plan to have an off-site or off-server backup? |

Hi Bob
it is understandable that planned downtime is necessary from time to time but, with regard to the IP changes, wouldn't it surely be easier to change the configuration of the local router rather than every nameserver on the server? With the assumption that routing protocols are being used, this would be a trivial change, incurring far less margin for error than the current plan. If you send the new nameserver IP addresses by email after the move, how will we collect them, bearing in mind that our email relies on name resolution working properly? Should we open a helpdesk ticket, as an alternative way for us to collect our new IPs? Thanks in advance Hal |

You should really use an offserver email as your main contact email, and also for the email used in your forum account setup, when you subscribe to your server forum -
"Forum Tools" >> "Subscribe to this Forum" >> "Instant notification by email" >> "Add Subscription" |
