Default PostgreSQL 8.1.9 on Jupiter

Hi there, Bob and Steve

Can I ask whether there is any chance that you would consider upgrading the Jupiter server from PostgreSQL 7.1.9 to 8.1.9. I appreciate that we already discussed this about a year ago but, since then, version 8.1 has become very stable (rock solid, in fact) and is also now available via the centos yum repo.

I hope you can consider this with with fresh eyes, as I would really like to take advantage of the major improvements in performance that have come about with 8.1. Also, the postgre community strongly recommends upgrades to the latest possible versions.

See:
http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/centosplus/i386/RPMS/

If there are any other jupiter users who would agree or disagree, please let us know in this thread.

If there is anyone else actually using postgre on jupiter, please also give us a shout out, so that we can discuss any difficulties a migration between 7.4 and 8.1 may cause.

Cheers all
Hal

Ergo - thanks for your reply. Bearing in mind that all the servers have the same OS version as jupiter, hopefully the request will not be out of the question. Obviously it needs to fit in with Dotables work schedule, which may already be long.

Thanks for your consideration too, Bob - yours and Steve's ever-industrious support is always appreciated.

Best wishes
Hal

As far as i know, its not the os that is the problem, im sure that postgresql will be upgraded if no one else uses it, or only you use it.

there is a potential risk clients applications could break with new version of pg ( not really likely imho - never had problems with migration , but steve takes that into consideration as far as i know ).

No probs, I'll get the source rpm (8.2.5) and rebuild it for jupiter.
Seeing as there are only 3 postgres databases on the server, shouldn't be an issue, as I think they are all yours anyways.

Does require the databases to be dumped, upgrade take place and then dump the databases back in - rebuild 2 x php installations with the new postgres libraries etc. Will most likely be able to do this later today.

That's fantastic news, Steve. Thank you very much for doing that.
Just to let you know, I don't have any pg databases as far as I know, so were your comments directed at Ergo?

If you still think one of my clients may have set them up, would you mind contacting me privately so that I can contact them accordingly to pass on your advice?

Many thanks
H

Steve

Would it be possible for you to set the default encoding to utf-8 or unicode when you upgrade postgres, please?

I believe the default locale is C, which is ideal for me.

Also, will the upgrade to 8.2 be reflected in phpinfo and phpPgAdmin?

Hope this is OK.
