Default Hiding dotable related info ie Nameservers

Hi Bob & Steve,

I am not sure if this has been brought up before but should this forum be setup to censor any nameservers related to dotable. For example, there was a post earlier asking for NS for one of the server and Bob posted ns6. d o t c o l o . c o m. And instead of it showing ns6.dotcolo.com it should show ns6.******.com.

This way, reseller's anonymity would be even safer.

Just a thought

I was thinking that when I typed in those nameservers.

Is there some code I can add before and after the text, that forces robots to skip over and not index that text?

We can't censor the nameservers, as that would defeat the purpose of them being posted.

hehe...true but maybe that "forces robots to skip" idea would work.

Well if someone knows the code we can insert into a post reply, that would be great. I'll do some googling and see what pops up.

The safest way to protect resellers anonymity would be to either exclude all of Dotable from the search engines (not very good for Dotable's business) or alternatively have a closed forum for clients only which contains any sensative information.

The best way, imho, would be to have a separate knowledge base (within a sub-folder) which used robots.txt to avoid spidering. Answering a query like that on the forum would simply entail posting a link to the answer in the KB.

The best way would probably have some plugin that can make an image of the nameserver info, like those image for captcha.

Yup images are the quickest, and easiest way me thinks.

Hmm.. Yes, images would work but I can't help but thinking that:

1. It's terrible in terms of accessibility (you may feel that statement isn't qualified given Dotable's target audience but it's worth considering this issue...)
2. It's also harder to keep up-to-date (whereas one central Knowledge Base, actively updated, keeps everything fresh and correct whilst also benefitting from blocking nearly all spiders)
3. An image generation script will take further scripting and use up more server resources. Will everyone be able to use the image system to reply? Or will a custom image be created every time?

If, say, Bob created a PHP script to generate images to answer replies then that would limit the Dotable community at large from answering questions... Would I be banned for replying to a question in, God forbid, plain text?!

hey bob

hmmm, there are two ways, create a CUSTOM BBCODE like [regusers] to show things only for regusers, but a very fast workaround should be creating a censorship rule for forum :

replace dotcolo with ******* , for instance but im not sure if this is what you want to accomplish as all "dotcolo" words would be replaced

it is possible with phpbb so it should be spossible via vbullettin too
