Hi there,
WOW, what a headache, looking for a host. Never in all my surfing of the web have I come across so much marketing BS, disinformation, hype.. I guess you've all been there, done that. But eventually I ended up here, and noticed something different.... So before I take the plunge, I just wanted to run by you what exactly I need. 1. With my family, I travel the world moving from posting to posting. We currently have an email address with a french ISP, but our ISPs change all the time. This means we can download our mail into Outlook Express/Thunderbird, but when sending out (using the French account's smtp) we get an error. Our local ISP in India is great for bandwidth but the smtp it provides has restrictions (like no large attachments etc..). That got me thinking about setting up my own domain, with my own pop server and smtp that can be accessed anywhere in the world and through any ISP. Am I on the right track here???? 2. Otherwise, I just want to set up a few email accounts, set up a basic website to share pictures with family across the globe, and maybe some other bits and pieces. Nothing too fancy -- so think this side of things are OK. 3. For domain name registration, I was thinking of Dynadot, which seems to be more than just a reseller and reasonable price. Any other suggestions? Many thanks in advance for your help! Stefan |

![]() You can manage all aspects of your domain/s there, and it's not interconnected with your hosting account, so if you wanted to host that domain with another host, you're free to. If you're looking to host the 1 domain, then our single domain plans would be best suited for that. Sing out if you need anything further.

OK, many thanks!
Sorry though to ask another dumb question-- So, in Outlook Express settings (for example), for mail I would just insert something like: Incoming: pop.mydomain.com Outgoing: smtp.mydomain.com and this means I can send and recieve email through any ISP? Also, can I access the mail through a browser/webmail from something like an internet cafe for example? And (finally!) can the sending and receiving be SSL secured? thanks! |

Many thanks.
I've been searching and searching and searching other hosts, but this seems to be the only one I can trust.... having an active user forum as a frontpage certainly makes a big difference... I think I'll go for the SD-2 plan -- I'm sure I don't need the bandwidth, but better to have a bit of overhead just in case. rgds stefan |

I may be wrong, but don't some ISP's block smtp traffic?
If so, and yours is one of them, you might have to use port 26 (assuming they have it open) which I believe Dotable does on most of it's servers. It's entirely possible, this doesn't even relate to what you're trying to do, but it has bitten me in the past since my ISP blocks port 25 and port 26 was one (slight) reason for my signing on with Dotable. Since I use Gmail for almost everything now, it really no longer comes into play. cheers |

Tried everything -- just couldn't find a way to send mail through my usual smtp (my email provider is my old ISP in France). Sometimes it worked, most of the time it didn't, problem seemed to be on the french end (perhaps they block smtp access from IPs outside France?). With the SMTP of my new ISP (in India), there are a tonne of restrictions (like no attachments >2mb, etc etc) -- even though I have an unlimited bandwidth subscription.
I'm happy with my choice of dotable though - smtp/pop/webmail for all the family, own domain, and a simple site to play with, share pictures with the family etc. |
