Hello Bob,
I was wondering (I dropped you a ticket about this, but figured everyone might benefit from this), what happens if the VPS hostnode has a failed disk (ala Jupiter) or has other chronic issues? Would the OS (hostnode and VM) need to be reloaded and restored from cPanel backups, or is there a "snapshot" mechanism in place for cPanel configurations, etc. so we don't have to go back and reconfigure everything as we like/want it? So far though - I'm liking my new VPS .Thanks Bob and Steve! |

Your vps is exactly like a dedicated server when it comes to backups.
At present we keep an image to install from, so it's a matter of copying the image and changing the hostname and IP's. Then you can restore the remote backups that we keep for you off server. There isn't all that much to copying all the cpanel configuration, all you really need is /var/cpanel /var/named /etc /usr/local/apache /usr/local/frontpage and /usr/local/cpanel and that would pretty much cover everything for a restore (combined with your account backups) without too much re-configuration at all. I think that I could incorporate all that and even a restore option into the vps control panel that I'm working on. Be great to get some ideas from you as well, regarding what you want or would like to see.

Hi Steve,
How long would it take to restore a complete node from bare-metal to data recovery/restore of accounts? Also, would that restore be done by Dotable or would we have to do that restore? |

We'd do the restore, all VPS's are managed (unless you specifically wanted to do it yourself of course)
Restores should be done within an hour, depending upon how much data you have.

Steve,
I'm not talking about the actual restore time of the files within the VPS - but rather the time it takes to get to the point where you can restore files. Quote:
