Default Custom nameservers on MD accounts?

Hi, I'm looking for clarification on weather or not MD accounts can use custom nameservers --

The recent server migration announcement said:

Quote:
All Dotable multi-domain accounts will not have private nameserver IP's, as is in line with the account. We understand that some accounts had these given to them, and we will not remove them, however you will be pointed to the shared nameserver IP addresses.
I'm not familiar with how nameservers work -- does this means MD accounts cannot have custom nameservers at all? (if so what nameservers would domains need to point to?) And if they CAN have custom nameservers, what are the differences between custom nameservers on these accounts vs a reseller account?

Thanks!

By default MD accounts did not have customer nameservers. However, some customers had them for some reason. So if a MD customer currently has them, we will not be taking them away. But we will also not be giving out new ones to customers that are on the MD plan.

If you have custom nameserver and have an MD account, you will still have them.

If you don't have them, the nameservers are different for every server. For instance, Earth had the nameserves:

ns33.dotcolo.com
ns34.dotcolo.com

we will be updating the IPs for those to be the new IPs of Starfire, which Earth was recently migrated to.

There is real no difference between custom nameservers or using ours, other than hiding the fact that you are hosting with Dotable and using our services. While some customers would like to keep this hidden, the majority of clients won't even notice\care. If you don't have custom namesevers and want them, you will need to upgrade to a DR account.

Thanks Jaku, that clears things up.

My question now is if I have an MD account with custom nameservers already, could I request to change those nameservers if I wanted to? (i.e. change them from ns1.bob.com to ns1.joe.com)

And in doing this change would I need to upgrade to a reseller account or could I say on an MD account?

For you... I'd be welling to make an exception.

Anyone that is currently on an MD that has custom nameservers can request a change on them if they wish. Without having to upgrade.

Awesome, thanks! I'll keep that in mind (I'm currently in the process of re-branding so I need to finalize the domain name for the new nameservers first.... it'll be a week or two).

Great. When you do choose to change it be sure to submit a ticket. Forum isn't the best place for that info.

Checking dotable.com @ archive.org for July 2006, when I signed up, shows _all_ accounts came with custom nameservers. Bob was then using his "DOT-1", "DOT-2", etc. scheme for accounts. It was about six months later that Bob changed from the DOT-scheme to a more standard account setup with "multi-domain" accounts, "reseller" accounts, etc.

(Both of my Multi-Domain accounts have custom nameservers)

UtopiaJon,

You will continue to keep your custom name-servers if you have them already.

Ok, I see where there is confusion. Some customers have custom nameservers with custom IPs. Meaning their nameservers have custom\unique IPs. Others have custom nameservers with the same IPs as the dotable nameservers. And others just use the dotable nameservers.

There is really no difference in using any of the three. Some customers will want to have custom IPs as well as custom nameservers, while others don't care what the IPs are as long as it works and they get custom nameservers.

However, as stated some customers have the custom IPs along with custom nameservers which is not part of the MD plan. Custom nameservers is, but not the custom IPs. Those that have it, will keep it.
