Default Server Choice

I need an opinion of some people. I am costing out a project and need to include some hosting information. The client needs a single chat room with the ability for users to open private chats among themselves. I can handle the coding, etc., but would a VPS be sufficient for say 300 simultaneous people or do I need to only consider a full dedicated?

I know a lot depends on the particular software (probably will end up Java based), but I'd like to see if anyone wants to venture an educated guess. I know a shared is out of the question...I'd like to have them host here on a VPS, but they are very concerned that it doesn't bog down out of the gates. There will be a forum and other items as well, but the chat will be the hog.

It's hard to give an accurate answer, but a VPS is a great start and you might be ok there. I would say start at the VPS level but inform your client that you might need to take it to the dedicated level, but you should be ok with a good solid VPS.

Thanks, they are extremely worried about the site starting off on the right foot, so it sounds like I may have to steer them toward a dedicated and then move down if it turns out to be overkill.

No worries. Sing out if you'd like some custom VPS pricing.
