Question A few Questions

Hello,

I'm on the fence about switching to your DR1 reseller.

Here are my questions:

I have one client who has a php script that uploads .mp3s his company produces. They usually upload 10, 5mb files at a time. This happens a few times per month. With my current host, they had to edit the php.ini file (that's what they told me...I hope it's the correct file) or a timeout would occur. As you can imagine it takes a while to upload those files.

Would this be allowed here? Basically I can't switch if this can't be done.

Also for the migration, I'm just a little paranoid... I just moved servers within the company I'm with, and my two ecommerce sites had issues (tables missing in mysql) and a lot of my passwords for my cms systems were randomly changed... If any mistakes are made, will they be fixed?

Lastly... for Aussie Bob, I know your company is stable here, and from what I noticed from when you ran httpme back in the day, your service and support was excellent. Although, how long do you plan on sticking with Dotable?

What prompted you to sell Httpme and they start up basically the same service with a different name?

In short, are you here for the long run?

Thanks

Dave

I can't see a problem with it. We'd also have to edit the php.ini file, but I can't see that as an issue.

Understood. We do a lot of incoming migrations with our inhouse migration software, and we have a near perfect track record. If a database is corrupted, we can go back for it, so it pays to leave the data on the other server for a few days after the migration, just incase.

We're in this for the long haul. Selling Dotable is not even a thought, but if someone comes along with an obscene offer, I would probably take it. Business is business, but the offer would have to be very large for me to accept.

Most folks know that I used to be a Builder, back in the mid 90s. I ran my own building company and built quite a large business, which at one point we had 22 homes in various stages of construction - but the building industry collapsed and the company hit the wall. We lost everything from our 2 properties to cars etc. So basically starting from nothing in 1997. I then discovered the internet and from there started HTTPme in 2001, and sold HTTPme in 2004.

The hosting industry is fickle. One minute you have a business with X clients, and it's valued at $X and the next minute you could have nothing. There's so many ways bad folks out there could wipe you out, so when we received a nice offer for HTTPme, my wife and I discussed this and chose to accept. It's like sitting at a poker table, with your winnings, and the longer you play, the more chance you've got of losing the lot. So we felt it was right to cash in our chips and walk away, so to speak.

We then built the family home with the proceeds. This was a hot issue for me, to own our own home again, since losing our home when my building company collapsed in the 90s. So that's the only reason I would sell, was to build our home. A man's home is his castle they say, and when you lose your own home, it's a burning desire to get that back, especially when you have a large family. So that's why I sold HTTPme. Sorry if I prattled on a bit there.

Some of us have known Rob for quite a while - I joined Httpme on it's second server (Neptune I think). He's been honest and open the whole time and I understand that securing his families future would be high on his list of priorities.

Once the house was well underway he clearly needed a new project to keep himself busy and out from under the wife's feet!

Incidentally, I had many conversations with Matt prior to, during and after the takeover of Httpme. He's an ambitious young man and I know he's now doing other things which seem to suit him better

Aussie Bob, (do you prefer Rob? Bob?)

Thanks for your straight forward and honest reply! I can see your a straight shooter, that's refreshing.

No problem about going off there, getting a good home is vitally important, esp, with a large family!

Thanks for covering my concerns as well.

Here's two more quick questions.

I've been thinking about having my websites hosted with a different domain name: mediareaction.net vs mediareaction.com.

If I decided to transfer here would it be possible to have all my accounts transfered to mediareaction.net??

Finally: Why no adult hosting, what's your reason for this? Just wondering? (I've specifically been looking for a no adult host

Thanks again!

Bloory- Thanks for the reply as well... I'm currently with BW which Matt also purchased. Uptim e is good, but the support has become weak.

That's a no. You can't switch domains like that, and not corrupt the account.

It's a personal decision, and I'd like to be able to look my children in the eye and tell them we don't make money from pr0n.

That's Steven, and not Matt. Steven owns BW.

Dave,

I just wanted to thank you for the great questions you asked of Bob and the manner with which you posed them. It's great to be reminded of those questions and to see how the owner of the business fields them. Very well done.

As for Bob, I am always impressed with the frankness that he uses in his answers to these questions and other everyday messages. Very impressive.

Again, thank you Dave for the well thought out questions.

Thumbs up

Bob,

I'm going to jump aboard. I'll be signing up as soon as I gather all my users passwords.

Fourbit- thx for the comments, yes, Bob doesn't appear to beat around the bush. I didn't get the old ring around or the usual hype ie: "Our storage racks are made of solid gold" etc...

Now that you mention it, we use diamond crusted rails.
