Default opteron server

is there any reason not using Opteron server? From what I see Opteron server seems better than Xeon server, but from Httpme to Dotable, you are using Xeon machine? Do you think you will use opteron in the future?

Hi

I've just been a fan of the Intel Dual XEON proc, with hyperthreading. They run great in a 2U case, with good ventilation. I remember back to the early httpme days, when I ordered a bunch of 1U dual XEONs. Had a heap of problems with those 1U servers, as there just wasn't sufficiant ventilation, and there'd be problems with fans blowing out.

I'm not ruling out the AMD Opteron's for future server purchases. It pays to keep an open mind in today's fast changing technological landscape.

Also it doesn't really matter what type of server a host offers. What matters is the load and demand placed on those servers, and the output the client receives. I know some hosts who still have clients on Celeron P3s, and those old Celerons perform great, for those clients utilising those servers.

It depends on how they're populated etc. You might get better performance being on a very lightly populated Celeron, than being on a heavily oversold Dual XEON, or Dual Opteron.

yeah, I know it depends on how the host does on that server. Opteron also has been built in 2U servers, is that correct? Just wonder why dont use Opteron, because
- opteron server is cheaper than xeon server?
- opteron server can process more than xeon server?

so, basically you will get more profit :p

I'm certianly open to more profit.

When I purchase the next batch of Dotable servers, I'll definently give the opterons a closer look. Some fellow hosters are starting to use them, so I'll have a chin wag with them and see what's up.

Thanks.

Hello Aussie Bob,

Currently, I am a customer of HTTPme and need an additional account in the near future.

I wish to set it up here since I am your fan. Can you contact me via PM or e-mail when an opteron server will become online in the near future since I am an opteron server fan also.

Thanks,

nonstop

Hi nonstop

Yep, looks like the next couple of Dotable servers I'll be racking, will be Dual Opterons. They'll be racked in the next 30 days. I'm confident to use them for Dotable client servers.

But, having said that, it doesn't really matter if you're placed on a Dual XEON, or a Dual Opteron. What matters is how that server delivers to you, and how that server performs, for you. There's lots of variables that contribute to server performance, from a client's perspective, and the server specs are just one of those variables in the mix.

Yes, I can completely understand what you want to say. That's the reason why I have set my first account up at HTTPme.

Anyway, please contact me with the newest server info.
