Default NZ soon to be Naked!

Naked DSL is coming and about time.. no longer will kiwi's have to purchase a monthly line rental from telecom in order to get broadband.

In with Naked DSL, VOIP and out with telecom, the freedom of choice

Interested to hear what folks are paying for their internet these days in your country and what limits you have in place.

In the Uk the market has been swamped by various telcos and media companies bundling tv, phone and internet sometimes mobile/cell phones.

I use Orange because with my cell phone package (~$70/month) I get an 8MB at home free.

Over here - if you're in a region where it's offered - you can get DSL from US$ 25/month (flatrate).
Right now cable companies and the main DSL provider PRT - they teamed up with DirecTV - are trying to lure consumers into a combo package: cable or satellite tv, telephone and broadband internet all together in one deal for somewhere around 70 bucks/month.

Since I live in the middle of nowhere, I can't get DSL nor cable.
I have mobile broadband contract with my cell phone provider Sprint. For 60 bucks/month (2 year contract) I have EVDO. I can take my laptop all over PR and the USA. If in the Sprint coverage area, I have my internet connection. Ah, the contract is flatrate - no time and/or bandwidth limits apply.

You don't live in the middle of nowhere if you can get Sprint EVDO. Bet you can't take your laptop up here in Maine and get any kind of connection with any cell phone company much less Sprint. The only options above dial-up here is satellite and it sucks. I am jealous of people who can get EVDO, DSL, Cable, etc. to the point I am looking into starting a wireless internet service in my area.

OK, let me rephrase..
The cable companies and the telephone company don't want to put their cables in the ground up to the mountain where I live, but I'm on the edge of the Sprint mobile network coverage area.

Better??

I feel for you Dave, really. Satellite sucks, you're right.

Wireless is pretty cool, although I should look into a booster antenna, being on the edge of the coverage area.

That's better

Do you how far away the nearest wireless base radio (access point) is from you? And is it line of sight? I am learning quite a bit about wireless technology at the moment and looking for real world data I am looking to use 900MHz access points to allow longer distances and penetration of trees.

That's the price you pay for living in paradise Dave.

I would love to move out into the country and get among nature, but it keeps coming back to no ADSL, no move. Wireless Broadband around these parts is the best way for rural folks to get some kind of broadband, if they can't get ADSL. Just have to make sure that you're within range of Telstra's Next-g network, which has pretty good coverage.

I pay AUS$75/mth for the 1.5Mbps ADSL and AUS$80/mth for the 512Kbps wireless for the laptop.

I have no idea where the next access point or tower is. Sprint doesn't have that info online as far I know.
It has to be North and down in the valley from where I am, that's all I can offer..
Sorry I can't be of more help.

I'm currently with BT and paying £32 a month which is for unimited UK calls and 8Mbps ADSL.

Whn I move in a couple of weeks I may well take a cheaper phone package and use Orange for my internet access as 8Mbps is available for free with my mobile package.

It sure beats Brisbane where, I could only get ISDN (128Kbps at best) and 5 houses down the road had ADSL and cable available

I have adsl up to 8Mbps / 40GB limit (for NZ$35.00 pm less some discount.. on a special plan) but where I am away from the exchange I only see about 6Mbps... which is still pretty good.

They're rolling out adsl2+ from september too, so things are looking up.

Wireless, G3 etc is great for doing the odd thing at the beach etc for me, but if you're working in a terminal session all day long, the latency becomes a real drag to say the least...
