Exclamation Datacenter Maintenance

Quote:
Date: Sunday, August 10th
Time Frame: 8PM to 8AM PST
Location: 6th floor datacenter

Details:
To continue reliable and stable power service to your servers, we will be performing breaker panel upgrades. The reaction to this upgrade may cause a server interruption for an estimated period of 15 minutes to 30 minutes.
We will "soft shutdown" your machines by using a console cart and issuing an O/S shutdown. This will prevent any data loss or corruption.
Once your machine is offline, we will perform the maintenance and turn the server on again.
Once your machine is back online, we do not estimate any further interruption. We will be performing the maintenance batched by cabinet.
This maintenance affects the following servers

Mars
Earth
Venus
Jupiter
Saturn
Neptune
Shadow

Dedicated servers, VPS servers and our own server will be unaffected by this maintenance.

I must admit I struggle with these conversions...
(Might save a time conversion link one day)

NSW/QLD time = Monday 11th of August from 1pm.

Would that be close ?

This isn't clear to me either. Does the time period start Sunday 8PM and end Monday 8AM PST?

The maintenance window is between 8PM to 8AM PST August 10th -> August 11th
So that is a 12 hour window, in which the maintenance will be carried out (15-30 minutes outage during that time)

PST Time Zone

it wouldn't be unreasonable to ask the colo provider for the notices to note the time as "PDT (GMT-7)". would be simpler to do the math than having to remember how many hours PDT or PST are offset from GMT. This is the way most carriers and datacenters notate maintenance times.

Even though I know the delta between PDT and my own EDT, I think the request to schedule datacenter activities in UTC/GMT is reasonable considering this is the World Wide Web.

It's back to that one world clock that Aussie Bob wants

Back to this Time zone discussion again.

Even tho Californians think the world revolves around them, doesn't mean that the rest of us should.

As much as I hate 'Worldwide' anything, I agree that the times should always be placed in terms of UTC. Just makes things that much less confusing and verifies that the person that has put the time zone designation may really have a clue as to what it is. I have seen soooo many people put times in a format that they thought was correct but, turns out to be wrong by up to three hours. Frustrating.

Which brings up the question of why their notice is for PST (Pacific Standard Time) and not PDT (Pacific Daylight time) which is what they are currently using. One could assume. But, you know what does.

Anyhow, thanks for the heads up on the downtime. It will be interesting to see if all goes well this time.

BTW, timeanddate.com works and is pretty easy to remember.

And here is the countdown.

That is assuming they actually meant PDT in their announcement and not PST.

That's another pet peeve of mine -- get rid of daylight savings time!!! It just confuses everyone and it messes with peoples internal clocks.
