Could be a cached dns result or something like that or simply the resolvers that he is using are flakey. Try using a different set of name servers for his resolvers (check what they are set to and change to some other local ones)
Easiest thing to do is to ping or nslookup 'mail.domainname.com.au' when he gets the problem anyway, to see if there is a resolution issue.
